17 Year old local high school student Charlotte Parrot opened for the group Not A Sparrow at the Evening Muse Saturday night, performing a hour long set covering 10 of her original songs as well as one cover. The Evening Muse was almost at capacity as fully half the audience comprised of peers and family of Charlotte’s as they came to support and hear her in one of her largest and best performances of the year. Charlotte Parrot is becoming a recognized acoustic singer-songwriter who’s songs resonate with a pop sound and writing telling the stories from the innocent paradigm of a well loved and nutured teenager.
Charlotte’s confidence as well as song repertoire has grown steadily over the past couple of years transitioning from the nervous teen to a self-believing young lady with a future bound only by ambition and furthering of education and knowledge.

The set list tonight included:
Stock In Stars
Meeting Place – a song about friend Robert Ryan
An untitled new song
A cover of “Electric Feel”
Simple Song (What Makes Me Happy)
The featured artists for the early show Saturday night were the three piece group named “Not A Sparrow”. They are made up of Philip Hamrick (Vocals, guitar, humor, & keyboards), Rachel Hamrick (vocals), and Christina Swinger (violin). This trio produces beautiful musical melodies and vocal harmony in songs of love and life which are very pleasing to the ear.
Not A Sparrow has recently released a self-titled CD featuring 8 new songs of faith, forgiveness and even narcolepsy. Choosing to record the entire project in the Hamrick’s home in the countryside 30 miles north of Charlotte, North Carolina, the band has produced an organic new sound that mixes pop with folk and bluegrass with classical. You can hear many of the songs on their MySpace page here.
After tonight’s show the band plans to take some time off and write some new material, returning to the stage this summer.
Some of the songs on their set list tonight included:
“Broken Pieces” with its upbeat melody about ife and its promises of love represent the sound of this group. Have a listen to it on their MySpace Page.
“Fabrications” – a song they original performed with their old band “Miles Apart”
“Better Than Before” – A song Phil had written for Rachel before they were married about how life was now that he had met Rachel. Yeah its a bit sappy, but its a cool song anyway.
“Swayed” – A former Miles Apart song featuring the vocals of Rachel Hamrick. A song about holding your ground in tough times and not being easily influenced, or swayed. This song can be heard on the Miles Apart MySpace page here.
“This Is Love” – A song about life and the impact of love that Philip had written for his grandparents 65th wedding anniversary. It speaks to the paradigm that many of us seek in our journey on this earth. Inspirational song as it describes success in reaching that aspiration.
“Valentine” – Written for Rachel back when he didn’t have any money for a gift, so the gift was his song.
“Give Yourself Away” – Inspired by the story of a friend on the wrong path in life.
“Seeds” – another song off their recent CD.
“I Am” – Also on the new CD, an uplifting song of love, hope and happiness.
“Fall Asleep” – As the title implies, its a song about the desire to sleep – or perhaps the unplanned eventual occurrence of sleep.
“Strangely Alive” – The title track from the last Miles Apart CD, performed with Phil on keyboards.
“Time To Move On” – Featuring Phil on keyboards and beautiful vocal harmonies by Rachel and Christina.
This was a fun 1 hour and 7 minute set of music by some very talented musicians with a sense of humor and a gift for making upbeat pop music with catchy lyrics which is pleasing to listen to. Hoping they come back soon with new material for our listening pleasure!
