For over twenty years, unsung heroes in our community have made it possible for kids and young adults with special needs to participate in sports. The Challenger sports program, locally sponsored by the Garden City Athletic Association, offers baseball, basketball, and soccer three seasons of the year for kids with autism, Down syndrome, ADHD, cerebral palsey, and other developmental delays.
Run entirely by volunteers and costing participating families absolutely nothing, Challenger has one main fundraiser a year and that is an annual dinner dance. This year’s event, the 4th annual dinner fundraiser, will be Friday, May 15th, at Villa Umberto’s, in Elmont, from 7:30 to 11:30 pm. Parents, relatives, friends, and other supporters (adults only) are encouraged to come and have fun and dance to the music of Chicago Joe & Company. Tables for up to 8 can be reserved in advance; $60 per person includes cocktail hour, hot buffet, pasta & carving stations, wine, beer & fruit, dessert and coffee. In addition there will be a “chinese auction,” 50/50 raffle, and a “silent auction.” Payment must be made in advance.
Proceeds go to support the sports program entirely, including the costs of sports equipment, mailings, t-shirts, trophies, and an annual barbeque.
