Cameron Douglas, the 31 year old son of actor Michael Douglas and movie producer Diandra Douglas was sentenced yesterday to five years in prison for dealing cocaine and methamphetamine out of a New York City hotel room, as well as for heroin possession.
Douglas has had at least two prior drug arrests, most noteably in 2007 when police found a needle filled with liquid coke in his car, and again on July 28, 2009 for having methamphetamine. His latest arrest occurred this past January.
While the charge of “conspiracy to distribute drugs” normally carries a mandatory 10 year prison sentence, the government agreed that Camron qualified for a lesser punishment, according to presiding US District Judge Richard M. Berman, who went on to state that in his estimation, “this will be a very difficult chore. I think this case and sentencing may be his last chance to make it.”
Prior to announcing his decision, Berman mentioned that he had read over thirty-five letter written by Cameron’s family and friends on his behalf, including ones from his parents, grandfather Kirk Douglas, and step-mother Catherine Zeta-Jones. However, he said that none included anything regarding how drugs damage society.
