Indy Football Report Editor John Oehser is taking a look at the Colts’ 2010 regular-season schedule on a game-by-game basis. Here’s a quick look at Week 8.
Not to give away too much too early, but, no, we’re not predicting in this series the Indianapolis Colts going 16-0, or even making a serious push for an unbeaten season.
That said, the first loss isn’t likely to come against Houston.
And it’s particularly not likely to come at home.
The Colts, who haven’t lost a meaningful game at Lucas Oil Stadium since September of 2008, never have lost to Houston in any game in Indianapolis. That’s a streak of eight consecutive games, and has included dramatic rallies in each of the last two seasons.
For a team to have the long-term success, it’s often necessary to have a team in its division that it beats in odd ways and under any circumstance, and there’s little doubt that for the Colts that team has been the Texans. That’s not to say the Colts won’t ever lose to the Texans, or that the balance in this series never will shift. In a very real sense, the Texans have been gaining on the Colts steadily in the last two seasons.
But in the NFL – for most teams without Peyton Manning at quarterback, anyway – there’s a limited time to move past a dominant division rival, and to take its place as an elite team. The Jacksonville Jaguars made a run at the Colts several years ago and never could take their place atop the AFC South, and while the Tennessee Titans edged the Colts for the division in 2008, the Colts immediately re-took the division.
If the Texans are going to make their push, they need to figure out a way to hold a big lead and outplay the Colts for four quarters instead of three. If it happens, it will likely happen in Houston and not Indianapolis, so it probably won’t happen in this one.
Prediction: Colts 33, Texans 30.
