Indy Football Report Editor John Oehser is taking a look at the Colts’ 2010 regular-season schedule on a game-by-game basis. Here’s a quick look at Week 1.
Sunday, September 12
At Houston Texans
The Indianapolis Colts, the defending AFC and AFC South Champions, will open the season in what will be a mammoth game for the Texans.
Considering the Colts have won the AFC South six times in seven seasons, and considering they played in Super Bowl XLIV last February, few teams on the Colts’ schedule won’t look at a chance to play host to Indianapolis as a circle-the-date game.
But for the Texans, this one likely will mean even more.
Not only have the Texans beaten the Colts just once in 16 meetings, they have lost the last six meetings to the Colts, with the losses a major reason Houston has hovered around .500 under Head Coach Gary Kubiak rather than emerging as a playoff team.
The Texans signed Kubiak to an extension following last season, but pressure remains for the franchise to make its first playoff appearance. Slow starts often have cost Houston chances at post-season appearances, and a victory over the Colts would give Houston big-time momentum in what Texans fans undoubtedly expect will be a breakthrough season.
Still, the Colts have owned this series, twice rallying from double-digit deficits to beat Houston last season, and their reign atop the AFC South has been marked by the ability to methodically win games their opponents see as breakthrough opportunities.
Most likely, that happens again on September 12.
Prediction: Colts 34, Texans 26.
