No matter what you call it- David and Goliath, underdogs or just plain luck, the No. 1 ranked Jayhawks (33-3) were destined to be the NCAA tournament’s sweetheart until they battled with Northern Iowa. With UNI knocking off the Jayhawks in a 69-67 win Saturday, fans were ripping up their brackets as the Panthers celebrated a miraculous win. Maybe Kansas just anticipated sliding into the finals but UNI proved to be better prepared once the clock ticked down to the buzzer. In dating, there can be times when making the right decision (such as Ali Farokhmanesh standing at the 3-point line…swish!) is crucial and can change the course of a relationship. For some this contemplation is getting and staying married, and the true underdogs are happily married couples according to many reports.
Denver based Scott Stanley, PhD, of the Center for Marital and Family Studies at DU, recently published in the Journal of Family Psychology his finding of the “inertia theory”. “Some people end up marrying someone they would have broken up with had they just been dating” he states, but because of shared responsibilities facing twenty-something unwed couples (including shared leases and finances), a pair may “slide” into a future rather than making a heart-felt choice. With twenty percent of all young marriages failing within five years of “I do’s”, something is not preparing young couples for a lifelong commitment.
Maybe it can be blamed on cohabitating, differing expectations, or merely growing apart-but there has to be a way for it stick. In a recent issue of Women’s Health, the idea of the “starter wife” is examined as they advise 5 ways to keep it together for the long haul. Some of their advice includes being supportive, having interest in each other’s passions and keeping things hot where it counts. Just as in sports, passion and teamwork are two key ingredients to success.”Let me get this saying right: hard works beats talent only when talent doesn’t work hard,” UNI’s Lucas O’Rear said after their win Saturday; but in relationships the trend is going toward cutting you’re loses if the “talent” or love just fades away.
With the Panthers advancing to the Sweet Sixteen, they made it, overcoming the tremendous odds facing them. Maybe some teams or couples are meant to have a short lived shelf-life while others will go the distance. Whatever course your relationship takes, enjoy the journey along the way and sooner or later you will have “nothing but net”.
