Governor Pat Quinn’s new dim bulb idea- a 6.25% tax on music and video downloads.
Governor Pat Quinn is not living in the real world. The state is on the brink of insolvency. The bond rating is tanking, meaning higher interest for borrowing money. The state cannot pay its bills. Illinois is a deadbeat. It is a three way race to the bottom between California, Illinois, and New York.
Quinn has refused to cut the budget significantly. He threatens to cut education, social and health services, and emergency services. Essential services.
He refuses to prioritize the budget, freeze, cut, or eliminate non-essential spending. Quinn absolutely refuses to consolidate or merge departments with overlapping or similar responsibilities. In effect, Quinn flat out refuses to do the necessary.
It is easier to raise taxes, implement new taxes, not pay bills, and borrow money. Then, he and the legislature can keep spending like drunken sailors. Quinn also refuses to alleviate the draconian and toxic business environment in this state. The biggest reason for business failure in Illinois is the State of Illinois. The biggest enemy of business in Illinois is the State of Illinois.
Quinn’s response is to raise taxes. He wants a 5% income tax increase. Oh, he claims he has come down to one percent, but that is a lie. He has been touting the 5% increase in back rooms for five years.
The state budget can be cut by one third without impacting essential services. That will not happen. Too many special interests give too much money to the politicians. SEIU gave Quinn 1.7 million dollars to Quinn. They own him. They will not stand for any cuts that will impact their members, especially future hires. AFSCME and the teacher’s unions are in the same boat.
These unions are going to lead a major protest in Springfield in support of tax increases. The SEIU storm troopers will be out in full purple shirted force. They love ripping off the tax payer. Hundreds of buses of union thugs will descend on Springfield to demand tax increases to keep their state workers happy and the union coffers filled.
Let us not forget the friends and family plans. Cutting the state budget would entail whole patronage armies- friends and relatives of politicians to be unemployed or worse, unemployable.
It is so easy to raise taxes. It is so easy to implement new taxes. It is so easy to create stealth taxes and fees. It is so hard to cut spending. Maybe Quinn should get a clue. You do not spend your way out of debt and you do not borrow your way out of debt. You cut costs across the board. You do not penalize the people for your malfeasance and malpractice.
Quinn has shown, through his refusal to cut the budget, he is just another machine hack. A boodler and boondoggler. A grifter and a scam artist. Pay to play, friends and family, special interests, and patronage all come before good governance.
