Denver 4 March 2010. The title is ripped off from John Lennon (in case you did not hear it.) It is the theme song from Freedom From Religion a group who is trying to silence The National Day of Prayer and others who publicly wear their faith in their everyday life. Jesus did not come to earth to spread religion- no matter what your open mind might be thinking. Jesus is all about relationship. Evangelism has become a dirty word for a number of reasons and partly because of “the thing we make it.” There is good and evil in the world and God knows it. He has a plan and some will follow others will rebel. The rebellious will either come to know Him or not.
Freedom from religion- the teachers of religious law
It isn’t complicated – God forms world, world falls into sin, God designs ways for sacrifice, salvation, and atonement. Culture is cursed by distorted thinking. God sends messages through prophets and his Word. God sends son as sacrifice, he is murdered-but he is not dead. He lives, sin has lost its power, for the believer “death has lost its sting.” To some that goes down as fighting words. Jesus offends people who are stuck in a state of “distorted thinking.” One other thing that ticks people off- “We know the rest of the story- and that is that the world will end- and for the teacher’s of religious law- the truth is that Christ is coming again.” I know- and when He does the ruler of this world- is going to let out – “CRAP!”
The Silence of the sheep!
The biggest enemy of God resembles our own sinful nature. We screw up the church, we stink at communicating His song, we suck at inviting people because we might offend them! We are not blunt enough and so we cower we change our language, we water down the message- and in the end it is Jesus Himself who will spit us out onto Colfax and Broadway.
Censorship of the Word
The calling for the missionary is to “Go.” Go into Denver, preach the good news and be the good news. People will censor me, will dilute the message, the examiner might even put us in a corner called “Religion and Spirituality.” I don’t write of religion, I write about what is good, that honors Jesus Christ in our media and culture. Freedom from Religion is probably the carrier of what Jesus rallied against- Religious law. Freedom of Religion is more “religious” in their worship of legal counsel than any other group out there! Religious legal jargon is an idol and in the end it will all wither and die. You may silence the sheep for now, but in the end there will be a loud Hosanna!
